Intel launches Ivy Bridge processors

Intel launches Ivy Bridge processors

Today Intel has launched its IVY Bridge processors based on its 22nm 3D transistor technology. They will collectively be known as the 3rd Generation of Intel Core Micro architecture.
According to Intel, these new chips based on the 3D tri-gate transistor technology will reduce energy leakage, and will boast of better graphics performance. In comparison to previous generation Sandy Bridge chips, these new chips will be able to handle 4k resolutions.

Here's everything you need to know about Ivy Bridge.
• What makes Ivy Bridge more powerful is its implementation of 22nm tri-gate transistors, which uses a 3D design that enables Moores law to remain intact. Ivy Bridge has a total of 1.4 billion transistors.
• For now Intel is only talking about quad-core processors, and all the mobile chips announced run at full power. There will be nine Core i7 quad-core chips (including an "Extreme" mobile chip, four other mobile processors, and four desktop CPUs), along with five Core i5 processors for the desktop. Desktop CPUs will run at speeds up to 3.5 GHz and Mobile ones will top out at 2.9 GHz. Details on low voltage Ivy Bridge processors for "ultrabooks," weren't discussed today, but will come later this spring.
• Ivy Bridge will offer 37% better overall performance than Sandy Bridge processors, and 20% better multithreading performance with 20% less power consumption.
• Integrated graphics performance and media performance will be two times better than Sandy Bridge, and can support three displays. There will be two integrated GPUs—the HD2500 and HD4000—powering Ivy Bridge graphics. And for gamers, Direct X 11 will be fully supported.
• Intel's Quick Sync technology—responsible for video transcoding—has been improved, which will result in speedier transcode times.
• Additionally, Ivy Bridge is equipped with WiDi 3.0 wireless video technology, which will allow for dual monitor support without the need for cables.
• There will be 300 different Ivy Bridge notebooks and 270 desktops (which include towers and All-In-Ones coming in the next year.
